East Brunswick Rescue Squad Provides Medical Volunteers at the Rutgers “Unite” Half Marathon Event

EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ — As a way of raising awareness and funds for a new ambulance that is on order, the East Brunswick Rescue Squad sent fifty one volunteers, including family and friends (many of them EBHS students), to participate in the Rutgers Half Marathon Event this past Sunday in the New Brunswick and Piscataway campuses. Volunteers handed out water, directed runners and worked hand in hand with Rutgers EMS and Police to provided emergency medical services along the track’s 13.1 miles. Over 5,000 runners participated in this event representing a number of charities trying to raise awareness for each of their causes. East Brunswick Rescue Squad members ended up directly treating over thirty patients and transporting one to a local hospital. In return for this support, the event organizers, CGI Racing, donated $1250 to help fund the new ambulance which will have a total cost to the squad of over $150,000. The squad is actually borrowing much of the funds with a low interest loan through the East Brunswick Township that must be paid back. The squad relies completely on East Brunswick residents’ generosity through donations to keep it running. Many residents still assume that their property taxes pay for the squad’s services and that is just not the case. The squad is very appreciative for the 13% percent of East Brunswick residents who participated in our last fund drive which is used to fund some of its operational expenses. The hope is that more residents will donate as the squad’s expenses continue to rise.
