EAST BRUNSWICK, N.J. Last Monday evening, April 1st, at approximately 11:05pm, the East Brunswick Rescue Squad was dispatched to an emergency call for a woman who was possibly going to be giving birth. The Monday night rescue squad ambulance crew consisted of Susan Bender-Klein, Fred Beisser, Michael Cerame, and Sheldon Lee.

In route to the call, the ambulance crew was told that the patient was approximately 30 to 31 weeks into the pregnancy. When the crew arrived, they were met by three police officers, family members and the patient outside the residence. “We brought the woman into the ambulance and proceeded to assess her condition” said EMT Beisser. The crew then proceeded to make their way to the hospital and was traveling down Ryders Lane when EMT Bender-Klein asked the driver to pull over into the WaWa Parking lot on Ryders Lane and Milltown Road. A few minutes later, the crew delivered a baby boy. Since the baby was estimated to be about 8 weeks premature, medics were dispatched to assist should any complications arise.

“This baby was determined to make an appearance on April Fools’ Day and he successfully fooled everyone including the family, EMTs and paramedics in doing so,” said John Hosie, the squad’s captain. “The Monday night crew has lots of experience delivering babies. In December 2011 Fred and Sue delivered a baby boy on the way to the hospital as well. Baby deliveries are rare for us in East Brunswick as we are very close to local hospitals,” Hosie added.

With medics on board, mother, father, and baby were driven to St. Peter’s University Hospital where they were met by a myriad of medical personnel from the hospital. “Care was turned over to the hospital staff and the rescue squad crew returned to our quarters feeling totally elated after helping to bring a new child into this world,” reported EMT Beisser.

About the Crew:

Fred Beisser is the Chief Trustee and a life member at the squad putting more than 950 hours last year alone. This is his third delivery.

Sue Bender-Klein is the Four Year Trustee, volunteering more than 400 hours last year. This is her fourth delivery.

Michael Cerame joined in December of 2012 and is already nearing the 200 hour mark. This is his first delivery.

Sheldon Lee joined in November of 2012 as a first aider. This is his first delivery.

EAST BRUNSWICK, N.J. — The East Brunswick Rescue Squad is happy to report another CPR save this past weekend. A 72 year old township resident was complaining of difficulty breathing around 3am this past Sunday morning and had a family member immediately call 911. Soon after, the resident stopped breathing and went into cardiac arrest. East Brunswick PD dispatchers with the help dispatchers from Med Central (RWJUH) were able to successfully give the family member instructions on CPR over the phone, which they did, until first responders arrived.
Minutes later, East Brunswick Police Officers Brian Adams and John Sisolak arrived and continued CPR. Shortly thereafter Paramedics Chris Terranova and Brian Lowndes from RWJUH arrived along with EMT Steven Bellows, Cadet Janvi Sharma and Assistant Captain John Hosie of the East Brunswick Rescue Squad.
The first responding police officers attached the AED which detected that the patient would not be helped by shocks. Paramedics Terranova and Lowndes immediately started intubation and an IV line while EBPD and EB Rescue Squad members continued compressions and managing the patient’s breathing with a bag-valve-mask. Multiple doses of epinephrine were administered which resulted in the patient getting a pulse.
“Getting CPR started immediately is so critical to anyone’s survival who is in cardiac arrest,” according to Hosie. “Successful cardiac arrest resuscitations are a result of a huge team effort. From bystanders/family members to dispatchers to Police Officers to rescue squad EMTs to paramedics, this save happened because everyone involved did what they needed to do. A key factor to this resident’s survival was that a family member was willing to do CPR when instructed to over the phone.”
This is the second CPR save for the East Brunswick Rescue Squad this year. In 2011 the squad responded to 12 cardiac arrests and had one CPR save. The squad answered 1938 calls last year.”

EAST BRUNSWICK, N.J. — The East Brunswick Rescue Squad is happy to report a CPR save of a township resident last weekend. An 89 year old township woman was complaining of chest pains and called 911 this past Sunday morning. Soon after, she stopped breathing and went into cardiac arrest. East Brunswick Police Officers John Bird, Thomas Appell and David Methner were first to arrive and quickly recognized what was going on. They immediately started CPR. East Brunswick Rescue Squad members Mythili Rao, Katherine Quiza and Jake Cotton arrived minutes later and quickly teamed up with EBPD to continue CPR. As it turns out, the first responding police officers had already attached the AED and had shocked the patient once before the squad’s arrival. “Getting CPR started immediately is critical to anyone’s survival who is in cardiac arrest,” according to John Hosie who is the Rescue Squad’s Assistant Captain. “Working with professionals like the East Brunswick Police Dept. is an incredible benefit for the squad and certainly for the patient in distress. Our township residents need to understand that our town’s Police Officers are highly trained in CPR and using an AED. They are very effective in what they do and they play a critical role in many kinds of medical emergencies that happen in our town.” Paramedics from RWJUH also played a critical role in this save where multiple shocks were given and intravenous drugs pushed until a pulse was obtained on the way to the hospital. “CPR is a high stress, all hands type emergency where the squad will even send multiple teams to pitch in.” according to Hosie. “CPR saves are rare. In 2011 the squad responded to 12 cardiac arrests and had one CPR save. The squad answered 1938 calls last year.”

EAST BRUNSWICK — Most times their role is to prevent people from leaving this world. This past Monday evening, Dec 5th, the crew of an East Brunswick Rescue Squad ambulance helped bring a new life into this world. After dialing 911 at about 8:20pm Monday, the squad was dispatched to a local hotel for a women in labor. The expecting mom did exactly what she should have right after her water broke by not waiting and calling 911. Paramedics were also dispatched from Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital as a precaution. Volunteer rescue squad members Sue Bender-Klein, Fred Beisser and Jimmy Chen were the first EMTs to arrive. They did an evaluation to make sure their patient was stable and then proceeded to meet the Paramedics who also confirmed the patient’s condition. Since contractions were still about 3 minutes apart with no crowning and this being the first baby for this patient, paramedics were released and the crew proceeded with the patient to St. Peters Hospital. On their way, EMT Sue Bender-Klein noticed that the patient had started to crown and directed that the ambulance pull immediately over for the imminent delivery. At 8:51 P.M., a healthy 7 pound, 1 ounce, baby boy was successfully delivered on the ambulance. Paramedics were again dispatched and were met on the way to St. Peters to confirm mom and baby were doing fine. On arrival at the St. Peter’s ER, mom, baby and the EMS team were greeted with cheers from the doctors and nurses who were on duty. While getting calls for women in labor is not rare, it is very unusual to have a baby born on an ambulance especially in East Brunswick where area hospitals are only 10-15 minutes away. Most volunteer EMTs rarely get to experience such an event and many who have been doing this for 20-30 years are still waiting. This was the second delivery for both Fred and Sue which is akin to hitting the lottery twice.
The East Brunswick Rescue Squad will be celebrating its 60th anniversary in 2012. This is an all volunteer organization whose financial support comes solely from donations. Tax deductible donations can be sent to EBRS at 346 Cranbury Road, East Brunswick NJ 08816.

The East Brunswick Rescue Squad and the St. Bartholomew’s Knights of Columbus are teaming up to have a “Special” Blood Drive this Sunday, June 5th, at St. Bartholomew’s Church (470 Ryders Lane) from 8am-2pm. Summer shortages are common but having the low levels we are experiencing now is especially concerning. Obviously we need all blood types but if you are type Rh negative (A-, B- and O-), or type O+, we especially could use your help now.. Please consider donating a pint of blood this Sunday at St. Bartholomew’s Church. Also, please consider telling a friend or family member about this situation. It impacts every one of us.

If you think you can donate, please contact John Hosie or the East Brunswick Rescue Squad at 732-387-8388 so that we can anticipate the number of donors we think we’ll have to make sure adequate staff from NJ blood services is available.
